Uber is a location-based app that makes hiring an on-demand driver easy. It’s a convenient, inexpensive and safe taxi service that monitors the entire ride on your mobile device. Three west coast moms used this idea to inspire their HopSkipDrive app, which they simply describe as “Uber for Kids.”
This app was started by three mothers with eights kids that not only go to multiple different schools but also have over 20 different after-school activities between all the children. The app updates parents regularly throughout the ride, send driver’s photo and information in advance, and is inexpensive. This is also helpful for single moms who have to work but need transportation for their kids to get around.
You must be 18 or older to have an Uber account and sometimes background checks aren’t as thorough for drivers. HopSkipDrive is stricter about who they allow to drive. Their hiring process requires an in-person interview, at least five years of childcare experience, and fingerprint submissions.
All rides must be scheduled 8 hours in advance and early morning pick-ups must be scheduled by 7pm the previous day.
Although on-demand is more convenient for an adult, busy parents already know the importance of scheduling and making arrangements for their children in advance. It’s also gives parents an ease of mind knowing that the driver has experience with children.
HopSkipDrive is currently offered in Colorado and California. Which state should offer this service next?
