How can you help but not be happy for young Guwop these days? While Tiger Woods is catching DUI’s, Gucci Mane is living good, engaged to his girl Keyshia Ka’oir, doing photoshoots for GQ and is basically living the life. In between his fabulous life, him and Metro Boomin have decided to collab for his new project, “Drop Top Wop”.
Young Metro delivers right from the start on “5 Million (Intro)”. Gucci sounds at home spitting, “They sent me 5 Million dollars I hadn’t been out a week / And I got 5 Million n*ggas playa hatin’ on me”. The music Gucci has been putting out since he got out of jail has been uneven at best. For every great showing like “Good Drank” we get a forgotten verse. On this project, I can say Gucci is trending in the right direction.
“Hurt A N*gga Feelings” shows a motivated Gucci. I have to admit I think Metro rubs off on Gucci in a good way, he sounds confident in his flow like he’s almost in pre-jail form. “Helpless” sounds strip club ready, somebody tell Guwop we are going to need a BET Uncut style video for that.
Let’s state the obvious right now, Migos member Offset has the standout appearance on the album. Generally speaking, Offset’s feet couldn’t have touched the ground while he was in the booth recording this. Taking on verse and hook duties for “Met Gala”, while Metro provides a banger. We might remember this song as the moment Offset took off.
Rappers 2 Chainz and Young Dolph make an appearance on “Both Eyes Closed” and the three country cousins give trap chronicles. Gucci continues to be upbeat about his current status rapping, “But it’s a beautiful day outside today / don’t know which car I’ma drive today / promoter just brought me 200 grand and I’ma count it by hand all hundreds with both eyes closed.”
Overall, “Drop Top Wop” plays like a mixtape, which suits Gucci best. Gucci’s personal life is looking great and it’s looking like his solo work is starting to get back on par also. Now can we get that joint album with Zaytoven?
