HOT 97’s Summer Jam was filled with perfect weather (despite a slight thunderstorm), great performances and thousands of attendees traveling from all over.
My first summer jam experience was two years ago and after that, honestly I was nervous about attending this year but – everything went smoothly! No riots, no craziness in the lines and everyone seemed pretty happy throughout the event. Before I get into the performances, I want to touch on how great of a job HOT 97 does to book these artists, have the sets run smoothly without any technical difficulties and continue to keep the crowd entertained throughout seven hours. I was extremely satisfied with my second summer jam experience. It’s filled with hip-hop culture, throwbacks to dance to and radio legends.
The concert started with three of the top females in the game Kash Doll, Megan Thee Stallion and Melii. Each performed their hit radio singles, “Ice Me Out,” “Big Ole Freak,” and “HML.” It was nice to see female musicians represented well on stage, alongside HOT 97’s DJ Megan Ryte. Besides Cardi B and Yung Miami, these were the only female performances of the night.
The fellas also represented well bringing out multiple surprises and representing highly for New York. Casanova made sure to incorporate his city’s culture within his performance bringing out Flipp Dinero, Afro B and Davido. He performed some of the crowds favorites including ‘Set Trippin,’ 2AM which he brought his girl Jazzy out to give us a little PDA and my personal favorite ‘Don’t Run.’ One thing I loved about Casanova’s performance was that he talked about how he snuck in summer jam most of his life and now he’s performing on the stage – dreams are always possible.
A Boogie had the entire stadium lit, the crowd knew every word to each song he performed and gave us nothing but a great set. He performed all of his hit singles and represented for the Bronx! I seen “hood” guys pretending not to know the words and hiding their face so they could sing the songs. A Boogie brought out everyone’s sensitive side and proved to the MetLife stadium that he made it.
Davido also gave a great show and everyone waiting to hear his hit single “Fall.” Rich the Kid also did a great performance as well.
One of my favorite performances was from Philadelphia’s own Meek Mill. Meek’s stage presence has become so captivating while performing. He grabs your attention with every lyric, shows all emotions and you can literally feel the pain in his lyrics while performing. Meek performed a few fan favorites including ‘House Party,’ ‘Uptown Vibes’ where he brought out special guest Fabolous and of course his career anthem ‘Dreams and Nightmares.’ Meek also brought out rising star Calboy who performed his hit single ‘Envy Me.’ I love how Meek always brings young talent to perform with him during festivals or huge concerts. We all deserve someone to co-sign us!
My favorite trio came onto the stage and immediately brought out the energy. I think people forget how many hits Migos has until they start performing. My favorite song that Migos performs is “Slippery,” because I love when Quavo sings “Slippery, excuse me, please me, arm up, believe me, believe me,” his ad-libs are some of the best in the industry and he breaks down the line so well. It’s good to see all three onstage even if they’re working on their solo careers. They performed of course “Bad and Boujee,” “Fight Night” for the day one Migos fans and many more. Quavo even brought out his girlfriend Saweetie when she performed “My Type.”
Overall, if I had to give summer jam a rating I would give it a ten. There was maybe one mishap but, everyone got into the venue safely, the crowd seemed to have an awesome night and the performances was great. I can’t wait to see who HOT 97 has on the lineup for next year.
