The Clemson Tigers walloped the Alabama Crimson Tide 44-16 in the College Football National Championship. The game started off poorly for Alabama, in the first quarter quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw a interception which was returned for a touchdown by A.J. Terrell. Alabama would respond with their own touchdown but Clemson would continue to score in bunches. Alabama had dug themselves into a big hole and were just unable to come out off it.
Clemson offense was rolling as true freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for 347 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions. Running back Travis Etienne chipped in with 86 yards and 2 touchdowns as did wide receiver Justyn Ross with 153 yards and a touchdown.
Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw for 295 yards and 2 touchdowns but he also threw 2 interceptions. The Heisman runner-up who had thrown 41 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions on the season was unable to lead the Crimson Tide to the championship this season.
Trevor Lawrence was named offensive MVP and Trayvon Mullen was named defensive MVP.
The Clemson Tigers won their second championship in the past three seasons and became the first team to go 15-0 since 1897. Alabama was unable to defend their title as coach Nick Saban suffered his largest loss at Alabama.
