Atlanta appears to be the new mecca of music and budding indie artists, which proves true with Teddy Swims. The Georgia native recently surfaced on my radar with his soulful cover of India Arie’s classic record “Beautiful Surprise.”
His YouTube channel has already garnered over 166,000 subscribers amid millions of views on his videos collectively. Furthermore, he started his YouTube in May of this year and look at those numbers, impressive. However, although he’s new to the YouTube scene he’s no rookie to music creation in general, having got his start many years ago as a musical theatre student and member of several bands ranging in genres of funk to country alternative.
Covers are not his only talent. He’s also released several originally scripted efforts this year like “Someone You Loved,” “Rivers,” “Night Off,” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” each one marveling in his genre flexibility, cinematic tendencies and sonic experimentation. Swim’s voice echoes with allure and stunning range. Furthermore, his lyricism is personal, descriptive and intentional. This is not an artist that creates mumble records doused in 808’s but indeed a musician that cultivates and ripens his sound thus gifting indulgers timeless music that makes you feel something. Swims makes soul music; music that defies expectations and is crafting what will be a revered sound for years to come.
What makes an artist, one to watch?
It’s not their style, or their social media following or just their music alone – it’s about the whole package. It’s the idiosyncratic amalgamation of style, character, good music and of course, a solid and thriving following and this young powerhouse has those ingredients.
He’s young. He’s gifted. He’s got a live band.
Teddy’s earthy, rustic tone melts in your ears for a breathtaking listening experience.
Stay tuned and check out his music below.
