Recently, Elle Magazine came out with a documentary about cultural appropriation–especially relating to hair–and the significance of such an act. Just when I thought things would quiet down from there, I was proved wrong. For their March 2018 issue, Allure Magazine is coming out with a photography series featuring the beautiful Lupita Nyong’o.
Allure Magazine says about the feature, “In addition to talking to Nyong’o about her relationship with her hair, we also gave her and hairstylist @vernonfrancois total freedom over the looks. “Lupita and I wanted to show that coil-y or kinky hair has many strengths and can be worn in lots of different ways, celebrating its beauty and versatility,” says Francois.” (Instagram) Vernon Francois also appeared as one of the hairstylists in Elle’s cultural appropriation documentary.
I am extremely happy with this feature and will celebrate even more if more magazines started implementing women of color and elements of their culture into the mainstream media. We need it.
