Every year, there’s always that handful of artists who have the potential to dominate the rap game, but stll have the tendency to get overlooked. Today I decided to highlight a few of those artists (in no particular order) who I feel are some of the most underrated rappers in the industry right now. Check out my top 5 list below:
Smino is one of the few artists in 2018 that has his own sound. In a time where most rappers sound the same, the St. Louis native put out an extremely unique album called ‘Blkswan’ last year. The album featured a breakthrough single entitled “Anita,” which was able to get the attention of rapper and producer T-Pain who hopped on the remix. With his ever-evolving sound, I believe Smino is only a hit away from becoming a star.
California rapper G Perico is one of the West Coast’s best underground stars. He’s brought a refreshing take to West Coast Gangsta Rap and even brought back the jheri curl. I believe he has a promising future and he’s someone to look out for in 2018.
J.I.D. is signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville record label and for a good reason. The Atlanta native dropped his first project last year entitled ‘The Never Story,’ featuring a plethora of stories and loose beats.
IDK has shown flashes of becoming the next big star. Last year, he released his album ‘IWASVERYBAD.’ The album was filled with hard beats and stories that loosely resembled Kendrick Lamar’s ‘goodKid, m.A.A.d city.’ IDK has managed to develop quite a following over the past few years, so look for him to continue his steady rise into the mainstream music world.
Denzel Curry has had some mainstream success. After being a member of the 2016 XXL Freshman list, the 23-year-old Florida native slightly faded away from the mainstream scene. With the help of some features and an upcoming project, I’m hopeful that Denzel Curry will find his way back into the spotlight this year.
